Naples Food Tours: 10 Things to Eat
The city of Naples has, since always, offered a great and unique food tradition.
In Naples food is not only food but it is rather a taste of the history behind each recipe to appreciate the effort that for centuries people put in these dishes.
Naples Food Tour: Salty Food
The food in Naples has a special meaning: sharing the local cuisine with family and friends. Naples’ cuisine has a lot to offer in terms of salty recipes but its main recipe is “Pizza”.
Known in all the world, Pizza became a dish that you can eat in all occasions: at restaurant, at home with family, sharing a Pizza with your partner or eaten as street food as it is often sold in slices.
There are so many different types of Pizza; the traditional Pizza is called Pizza Margherita made with three main ingredients: tomato sauce, mozzarella and fresh basil. Also really popular is Pizza Marinara made only with tomato sauce and oregano which is so recommended for vegetarians and vegans.
For cheese lovers, there is Pizza Quattro Formaggi made with four different kind of italian cheese: mozzarella, provola, gorgonzola and parmigiano.
For people who love spicy food, Pizza Diavola is highly recommended; made with tomato, mozzarella and spicy salame.
It is always difficult to decide which dish to choose from when we are in front of so many delicious receipes. In fact, there is a long list of different varieties of food that you can enjoy: as pasta in Naples, we can find different combinations among which:
- Frittata di maccheroni
- Pasta alla puttanesca
- Pasta e fagioli
As vegetables dishes the most famous are:
- Parmigiana di melanzane
- Zucchine alla scapece
- Friarielli (vegetables that you can only find here)
As special sauce:
- Ragù alla napoletana
A typical dish is also Casatiello and a traditional soup is Fagioli e cozze (this special combination seems to bring the sea into a rustic soup).
Sweets in Naples
Naples has a tradition also for sweets. The most known is sfogliatella, a special pastry filled with a typical kind of cheese called ricotta.
Sfogliatella can be “riccia” (curly) or “frolla”a less labor-intensive pastry that uses a shortcrust dough and does not form the sfogliatella’s characteristic layers.
In regards to cakes, Napoli has so many but the most important ones are:
- Pastiera and Caprese
Pastiera is a tart made with cooked wheat, eggs, ricotta cheese and flavoured with orange flavour water.
Caprese cake is, instead, a cake from Capri island made with chocolate and almonds.
Naples is also very famous for being a warm city, reason why Gelato (typical italian word to define ice cream) has here a long tradition. The selection of gelato’s flavours is limitless; it starts with all the chocolate assorment like nutella, kinder, bacio and goes on with stracciatella (a special white cream with chocolate flakes) and many fruits flavours. The city is full of Ice cream shops called “Gelateria” which also sell “Sorbetto”. Sorbetto, considered Gelato’s ancestor, has a fresher and softer taste; it seems to eat a soft cloud of strawberry or lemon which are the most recommended flavours.
We recommend to have Pizza in the historical centre of the city and walk through the famous food market in Pignasecca to try all the dishes that Naples has to offer. Contact us for more info in regard to our Naples food tour.
