What to do in the Amalfi Coast in December

What to do in the Amalfi Coast in December

On the Amalfi coast there is no snow or cold, in December, nor Christmas’ markets. Yet in December it is possible to visit the Amalfi coast to savor a different atmosphere from the summer’s one and, from there, you can move to visit other suggestive places nearby such as Naples. If you love tranquility, enjoying the atmosphere of a winter sea and exploring the coast without traffic and crowds may be ideal.

What to do in Amalfi Coast, then? Many Christmas-related activities are open from November until Epiphany; although it is not possible to swim, the climate is often still mild and you won’t miss the beautiful and warm sunny days.

In December the Cities of the Amalfi Coast are illuminated by a thousand lights and every showcase and square is dressed up with graceful cribs, representations of the Nativity. Moreover, many concerts and events are provided both for adults and children, and they are very often free due to Christmas holidays; the scent of the typical Christmas desserts - such as struffoli, roccocò and mostaccioli (or mustaccioli), which are paired with babà and sfogliatelle that we find throughout the year - spreads in the air, especially in Amalfi and Vietri sul Mare.

If you are attending the end of the year on the Amalfi Coast, the New Year's Eve on the Amalfi Coast is usually celebrated on the “Spiaggia Grande” of Positano, which turns into an open-air disco until dawn.

What to do in the Amalfi Coast in December: Amalfi and Positano

If you are on the Amalfi coast, there are places you must see and things you absolutely must do: for example, in Positano you can’t miss the famous "stairways", the typical narrow and winding streets that connect the upper part of the city to its famous beaches - the Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo, just to mention the most beautiful ones, reachable on foot from the city center. The city's symbol is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, famous for its majolica dome, whose history is linked to the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria.

In Positano, the shopping is famous and very typical, too: infact, Positano has been famous for the production of handcrafted sandals and clothing that respect the tradition of the "Positano fashion": beach dresses, towels, bags, pareos in linen or cotton and bikinis, recognizable all over the world. There are so many luxury boutiques and chic shops where you can buy these items and many others, for luxury gifts that will leave those who receive them open-mouthed.

Amalfi, the oldest maritime republic, is rich in history: you can admire Piazza del Duomo with the Cathedral of Sant' Andrea, the small typical white houses, the Vagliendola district, the arsenal, the Cavalieri seafront.

How to behave if it rains? Many activities!

What to do in Amalfi Coast if it rains? In this eventuality, there are many outdoor excursions to do in the area. After visiting the historical beauties of Amalfi and Positano, you can move a few tens of km to be spoiled for choice; you can opt to visit the MAV of Ercolano or go to Sorrento to visit the factories where they produce the traditional Limoncello liqueur; also in Sorrentofrom the first week of November, they set up the traditional Christmas tree in Piazza Tasso, offering a light show and themed sounds every hour.

You can also go to Naples or Salerno, both offering so many beautiful places to visit indoors and outdoors, if the weather is fine; in particular in Naples you can visit the Cucciniello Nativity indoor or San Gregorio Armeno, where you can buy cribs or shepherds to give as an original souvenir; in Salerno you can visit the Arechi Medieval Castle and its indoor museum or you can admire the Artist's Lights outdoors, luminous installations scattered throughout the city that can be admired from November 15th 2019 to January 19th 2020.

To get the most out of these magical places of Campania, moving even a few tens of kilometers, with a private car service is therefore not only simpler, but also very convenient in terms of organization.
