Tour for discovering Herculaneum: visit with us one of the most important archaeological sites in the world

"Vesuvius was screaming in the night, spitting blood and fire. Never since the day that saw the last ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii, buried alive in the tomb of ash and lava, had so dreadful a voice been heard in the heavens. A gigantic pillar of fire rose very high out of the mouth of the volcano: it was an immense, marvelous column of smoke and flames, which sank in the firmament up to touch the pale stars "(Curzio Malaparte)

In Campania it is possible to visit one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, the ruins of the city of Herculaneum, which together with those of Pompeii, make us realize the devastating power of nature and, in this specific case, of Vesuvius, the Neapolitan volcano.

If you are planning a holiday in Campania, or maybe you are a cruise passenger that will stop in Naples, you cannot miss the chance to book an exclusive half-day tour to discover the ruins of Herculaneum. You can be picked up directly from your hotel or from a pre-established meeting point and start your tour with an audioguide. You will be able to admire the ruins of Herculaneum, destroyed on October 24th in 79 AD by the eruption of
the volcano.

The ruins of the city were discovered by chance in the 18th century and they are in an incredible state of preservation. Time has literally stopped there and you will be able to linger to admire the house with the mosaic Atrium, Casa dei cervi, the thermal baths of the Forum and the house of the mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite, probing what could be the life of the Romans of that age. The ancient city was covered with 16 meters of pyroclastic material and mud, that allowed an excellent preservation of the houses, with architectural finds, jewels, furnishing objects, fabrics, food and much more, including, alas, people. In detail, you will be able to perceive the life and everyday routine of that era, by discovering:

The Central Thermal Baths, divided for men and women, with their changing rooms and three thermal areas: the frigidarium (cold room), the apsed caldarium (hot room) and the tepidarium (lukewarm area), where you can admire an impressive mosaic of triton among dolphins, marine subjects and a cupid.

The building of collegial shrine of the Augustals, with a quadrangular shape, built in honor of the Emperor Augustus. You will admire the splendid columns, the arches and its frescoes. The body of the caretaker, lying on the bed, was also found in this area.

The Samnite house, one of the oldest houses in the city, characterized by an impressive Greek-style atrium. You will have the chance to admire the classic impluvium, covered in marble and other architectural wonders. In particular, admire the Casa dei Cervi and the house of the Atrium, with the beautiful panoramic terraces and the statue represents two deers torn to pieces by a dog.

The fornici (vaulted spaces), that is, the classic warehouses of the port, where the boats were crammed, ready to be put into the sea (closer at that time). Here were found the skeletons of many people who sought salvation across the sea, bringing with them various coins and objects. Here you can also admire an impressive 9-meter boat from the
Roman era.

House of Neptune and Amphitrite, characterized by a beautiful mosaic. Near this domus, we find an ancient workshop with some finds and a tank that supplies the fountain of the house.

The villa of the Papyri, this stupendous villa, whose ownership was attributed to Lucio Calpurnio Pisone Cesonino, has been called in this way because inside of it, a library was found with 1800 papyri, still being studied. You will also be able to admire the floors, the subdivision of the rooms and the beautiful statues (exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples). Finally, you can visit the virtual archaeological museum, where you can see 3D videos that recreate the life of Pompeii and Herculaneum before the famous eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
